Roger Cremers (born 1972) is a World Press Photo Award winning photographer. His work is published in leading Dutch newspapers and magazines as well as prominent foreign titles.
Roger comes from a family of miners. He was born in Bingelrade, Limburg, a village once famous for its mining industry. Underground life in the mines would later become an important and recurring subject in Roger's work.
After studying aeronautical engineering, Roger began studying photography at theKoninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten in The Hague in 1995. Since 1998 he has worked as a freelance photographer. His work has appeared in numerous publications such as NRC, De Groene Amsterdammer, Vrij Nederland, de Volkskrant, Trouw, Der Spiegel, El País, The Guardian and Sunday Times Magazine.
In 2009, Roger won a World Press Photo Award: in the Art & Entertainment category, he received first prize for a report on tourist behavior in Auschwitz-Birkenau, the former Nazi extermination camp in southern Poland. His work has been shown in national and international museums and galleries, and Roger has participated in several photography festivals.
His work has a strong historical and social focus, highlighting the tension between the dark chapters of the past and how they are remembered or relived in the present. Irony is never far away in Roger's images.
