After working for 20 years in communications, Jitske Schols decided to commit herself to photography. In short time she built up an impressive oeuvre with an own unique signature.
Jitske is known for her portraiture in national dailies like Het Parool, de Volskrant and AD Magazine. Her work consist mostly of black and white photographs or photographs with faded colors. The combination of simplicity, melancholy and rawness makes Jitske's photography immediately recognisable.
Jitske's work is inspired by the late-nineteenth-century Dutch artists who lived and worked in the place where Jitske herself grew up a hundred years later. This is reflected in the atmosphere of her photographs, which can be characterized as melancholy, austere and contrast-rich. During Jitske's photo shoots, as well as the selection and editing process, she tries to translate the atmosphere of that bygone period into contemporary images.
Works by Jitske were shown at the Amsterdam Scheepvaartmuseum in Amsterdam in the exhibition Ode aan een Amsterdammer. She was awarded the Dutch National Portrait Prize in 2017.
